TOP STORY

🖼️ OpenAI releases “4o Image Generation”

This week, OpenAI released “4o Image Generation,” which integrated native image generation and editing directly into ChatGPT (spoiler: it went viral).

Unlike its predecessors that relied on external tools like DALL-E, GPT-4o allows users to create photorealistic images, render accurate text, and follow complex prompts with precision—all within a single model.

The new 4o image model is currently only available for paying ChatGPT users.

The OpenAI GPT-4o image-generation feature skyrocketed to viral, largely due to its uncanny ability to churn out Studio Ghibli-inspired images.

  • Studio Ghibli” is a renowned Japanese animation studio, co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki, celebrated for its hand-drawn films like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro.

  • Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki famously criticized AI-generated animation in 2016, calling it an insult to life itself after viewing an early demo.

For context: Hand-drawn anime, like Miyazaki’s films, involves immense dedication—Studio Ghibli’s “The Wind Rises,” for instance, features a four-second crowd scene that took animator Eiji Yamamori 15 months to complete, with each film containing 60,000–70,000 hand-drawn and watercolored frames.

Today, ChatGPT users can create a single frame in just a minute — while it won’t be as good, it’s undeniable that the technology is impressive.

DESIGN
🎨 Figma releases “Color Contrast Checker”

This week, Figma released a new “Contrast Color Checker,” integrated into the color picker, which is aimed at helping designers ensure their work meets Website Color Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards.

  • The WCAG are rules to make websites easy for everyone to use, especially people with disabilities like blindness or trouble seeing colors.

  • They help fix problems like hard-to-read text or tricky navigation so folks with visual, hearing, or other challenges can access the internet.

This feature will roll out to all users over the next few days.

The new color picker will detect whether you’re working with text or graphics, applies WCAG standards, adjusts for text size and weight, and then displays a pass/fail indicator with the contrast ratio if it doesn’t meet requirements.
